Aperture (the width of the main lens or mirror) matters more than magnification. A 6 to 8 inch Dobsonian is a classic, good-value first telescope for seeing the Moon, planets and brighter deep-sky objects. Smart telescopes cost more but find targets for you and build up images on your phone, which helps under light-polluted UK skies.
Never look at the Sun through any telescope or binoculars without a proper certified solar filter fitted over the front. Prices and stock change, so check with each shop.
