Getting started with model railways, in plain English
Pick a gauge first: 00 (4mm scale) has the biggest UK range, N fits a layout into a small room, and O is big, heavy and gorgeous. A Hornby or Bachmann starter set gets a loop running; Peco track and a decent controller come next. Join a local club or visit an exhibition before spending big — modellers love to share advice.
The duck's rule of thumb: buy track and points from one system, check whether a loco is DCC-ready before you buy a decoder, and look at pre-owned stock from reputable dealers. Prices, ranges and show dates change, so check with each business.
