Making Tax Digital for sole traders, in plain English
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax means keeping digital records and sending updates to HMRC using compatible software. GOV.UK says that if your qualifying income was over £50,000 in the 2024 to 2025 tax year, you should have started from 6 April 2026. It will apply from 6 April 2027 if it is over £30,000 for 2025 to 2026, and from 6 April 2028 if it is over £20,000 for 2026 to 2027 (GOV.UK).
The duck's rule of thumb: check whether your app is on HMRC's own guidance for choosing MTD software (GOV.UK) before you commit, and ask an accountant if you're unsure. This page is a directory, not tax advice. Prices and plans change often, so we don't list them here; always check the provider's own site.
